INFORMATION ABOUT CONTACTING THE ATTORNEY GENERAL

The purpose of this link is to allow electronic communication from persons having business with the Attorney General’s Office.  It also allows Arkansas citizens electronic access to their elected Attorney General.

To serve you better, prior to e-mailing the Attorney General’s Office, you should be aware of the following:

1. The Attorney General is prohibited by statute from the private practice of law.  A.C.A. § 25-16-701.  Individuals or corporations needing legal advice should consult private legal counsel.  Legal advice or information pertaining to private legal matters cannot be provided through this link.

2. The Attorney General can only issue legal opinions to certain enumerated state officials.  A.C.A. § 25-16-706.  The Attorney General cannot research legal issues or prepare legal conclusions for members of the general public or for anyone not authorized to request an official opinion or otherwise procure services from this office.  We maintain a searchable database of previously issued opinions on a number of legal topics on this website.  You may access this service by selecting “AG Opinions Online” from our homepage.  You may also access the statutory law of Arkansas by visiting www.arkleg.state.ar.us and selecting “Arkansas Code.”

3. The Attorney General does not have the authority to file criminal charges.  That power is reserved to the locally-elected prosecuting attorneys and the Attorney General does not have supervisory power over those officials.  You must contact the locally-elected prosecuting attorney’s office if you have business with those offices.

4. The Attorney General cannot reduce criminal sentences, grant clemency, or transfer inmates from one correctional institution to another.  For these issues, you may obtain contact information for the Governor’s office at www.arkansas.gov/governor

5. The Attorney General does not have authority over the professional conduct of Arkansas attorneys or judges.  If you have an ethical complaint about the conduct of a private attorney or an Arkansas judge, you may contact the Supreme Court Committee on Professional Conduct (for attorneys), or the Judicial Discipline and Disability Commission (for judges), by accessing www.courts.state.ar.us. Ethical complaints against other public officials should be directed to the Arkansas Ethics Commission at www.arkansasethics.com.

6. In Arkansas, the Attorney General does not have general authority or jurisdiction over child support, child custody, domestic violence issues or matters within the purview of the Department of Human Services.  For child support issues you may visit the Web site of Office of Child Support Enforcement at www.arkansas.gov/dfa/ by selecting “Child Support” and then “About Child Support.”  For matters involving the Department of Human Services, you may access the Web site of the Department at www.state.ar.us/dhs/ or contact the Department’s client advocate at (501) 683-2735.  Persons needing assistance with child custody or visitation issues must consult with private legal counsel.

7. The Attorney General does not have general supervisory power over local officials or local law enforcement agencies.  If you have questions, issues, or concerns about the activities of local officials, you may contact the Mayor or County Judge of the city or county at issue or contact your elected city council member or justice of the peace.  If you have questions or issues related to local law enforcement, you may contact the chief of police or mayor of the city in question, sheriff or county judge of the particular county, or the Arkansas State Police or Arkansas State Police Commission.

8.  If you have a consumer-related complaint or a suspected scam you wish to report, you may file a consumer complaint online by returning to our homepage and selecting “Consumer Tips,” or “Complaint Form,” or you may call 1-800-482-8982 to have a complaint form mailed to you.  For general consumer information, you may return to our homepage and select “Consumer Tips” or you may call 1-800-482-8982 and speak with one of our consumer counselors.

9. If you have business with a particular individual or department at the Attorney General’s office, it is advisable to e-mail that person or department directly.  You may contact us at 501-682-2007 to determine how best to direct your electronic communication.
